GENERAL INFORMATION

Cryogenics is a branch of science and technology which deals with problems of processes and equipment at temperatures lower than 120 K.

This includes the range of liquid methane, oxygen, argon, hydrogen, helium and other cryogenic gases, as well as specific behaviour of solid materials at these temperatures. Further, processes and devices for achieving temperatures close to absolute zero, important for research in physics, superconductivity and its application to magnetic devices are also included. Application of low temperatures and liquefied gases in industry, science, medicine and many other domains of human life bring new impulses and achievements every year.

Organizing committees of three international conferences dealing with problems of cryogenics:

ICEC, held every second year, usually alternating between Europe and other parts of the world,

ICMC, held every year, alternating between USA (in conjunction with the US conference CEC) and other parts of the world

and CRYOGENICS, an IIR International conference, held every second year in Prague and attracting participants mostly from Europe but also from other parts of the world

decided to join their efforts and to hold their conferences together in Prague

under the sheltering name CryoPrague 2006.

This makes it possible for participants from many parts of the world to attend all three events in one trip and to meet new colleagues and gain new perspectives. We believe that this unique event will lead to further progress in cryogenic science and technology.

INTERNATIONAL CRYOGENIC

ENGINEERING CONFERENCE

Co-sponsored by IIR

Objectives and history

The objective of the International Cryogenic Engineering Committee is to promote the development of cryogenic engineering on an international basis. It operates by holding international conferences, by promoting the interchange of information and by collaboration.

The Committee Members are scientists and engineers representing cryogenic activities in academic institutions, industry and governmental organizations. The major activity is to organize the International Cryogenic engineering

Conference every second year -- a tradition since 1966.The last three conferences were held in:

2004 Beijing, China

2002 Grenoble, France

2000 Mumbai, India

INTERNATIONAL CRYOGENIC

MATERIALS CONFERENCE

Co-sponsored by IIR

Objectives and history

The International Cryogenic Materials Conference focuses on the development, characterization, fabrication and optimization of the materials used in cryogenic applications. This is typically broken into two broad categories: structural materials and superconducting materials. ICMC contributions cover both high and low temperature superconducting materials, from basic material research through behaviour of composite cables and wires in applications. Cryogenic structural materials cover a broad range, including non-metallic composites, polymeric resins and insulation materials, ferrous alloys, nickel-base alloys, aluminum alloys and specialized materials for advanced cryocooler applications.

The conference is celebrating 30th anniversary in 2005. The last two conferences and the incoming one, which will precede CryoPrague 2006, are:

2005 Keystone, Colorado, USA

2004 Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia

2003 Anchorage, Alaska, USA

Short Courses

On Monday, July 17 2006, immediately prior to the start of the conference on Tuesday morning, ICMC will offer two short courses on cryogenic material topics. In the morning, lectures will be presented on the testing, properties, and selection of structural alloys and on the fabrication and properties of non-metallic composites for structures and insulation.
In the afternoon, there will be lectures on the development and properties of high and low temperature superconductors. Additional information will be available on the conference website shortly.

9th CRYOGENICS 2006

IIR International Conference

on Cryogenic Technology

and Equipment

with A1, A2, C1 Commission meetings

Objectives and history

The conference will deal with problems of the equipment and technologies where temperatures below 120 K (-153°C) are achieved, as well as with other devices and technologies related to the topic.

Application of cryogenics-based technologies in metallurgy, chemistry, power industry, medicine and other branches of the economy as well as in science and research will be the subject of discussion.

Cryogenics 2006 is a joint Conference of IIR Commissions A1 (Cryophysics, cryoengineering), A2 (Liquefaction and separation of gases) and C1 (Cryobiology, cryomedicine)

The conference is held every second year in the Czech Republic. Tradition of the conference goes back to the first Czechoslovak conference in 1972 and to the first International conference in 1992 in Kosice, Slovakia. The last five conferences were held in Prague:

2004 in Masarykova Kolej, Czech Techn. Univ.

2002 and 2000 at the Zofin Palace

1998 and 1996 at the Hotel Pyramida

VISIT PRAGUE

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is a city of rich history extending over eleven centuries. It has been acclaimed since ancient times, not only

because of its beauty, but also because of its “genius-loci”. Its unique atmosphere stems not only from its location on the hilly banks of the river Vltava but also from a blend of architectural styles like Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Art Nouveau and Cubist architecture up to contemporary styles.

Charles Bridge - the most famous bridge in the Czech RepublicThe unforgettable atmosphere of the historic city centre dominated by the Prague Castle and the Charles’ Bridge has been enchanting every visitor. In 1992 the historical core of the city covering 866 hectares was listed in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Register. Publicly accessible churches, museums and galleries can satisfy visitors keen on history.

Prague has played an important role in the history of the nation, the country and the whole Europe. Today, the city with more than 1 million inhabitants is an important centre of business, finance, industrial, educational and cultural activities. Prague today continues its tradition as a European cultural centre.

A wide variety of restaurants offers all many world cuisines including the traditional Czech meals. Many experts hold Czech beer the best in the world. Prague also offers numerous opportunities for late evening entertainment.
